About the book

Sandra Bem was an unconventional psychologist who, though little known, is one of the most cited, particularly for her work on gender schema theory. Beginning with her life story to find out who she was as a person, this book goes on to look at how events and people impacted upon Bem’s thinking. The final three chapters focus on her concept of psychological androgyny, her research into how a gendered society is constructed through an internalized gender schema, and finally, her proposal for removal of the lenses of gender and their replacement with proliferating gender categories. Her ideas have become ever more poignant with the importance of current LGBTQ+ identity politics.
