The Who the Hell is...? range is being created by a dynamic duo of writer/editors with a love of big ideas and interesting people.

We decided to get serious and create the books we'd like to read.

Alice Bowden

Alice has worked for many years in book publishing, editing non-fiction illustrated books. Originally trained as an editor at Quarto plc, the UK's largest and most successful book packaging group, she honed her skills at Octopus Books. Since then she has worked as a copywriter for Webboutiques and an editor for EditorsOnline whilst studying for a Masters in Art History on the side. Having written the first book in our Who the Hell is...? series on Erwin Panofsky, Alice commissions and edits our books, as well as managing the day-to-day business of this publishing start-up.

Sarah Tomley

Sarah originally studied philosophy at university before working in book publishing for more than 20 years. As editor and commissioning editor for some of the UK's most prestigious publishing houses, she has commissioned many bestselling reference books including The Philosophy Book (DK) and the award-winning The Psychology Book (DK). More recently she has trained in counselling and psychotherapy, and her latest book – What Would Freud Do? (Cassell & Co., London) – has been translated into 11 languages. Sarah also co-authored The Children's Book of Philosophy, The Sociology Book, 100 Events That Made History and Lady Penelope's Book of Cocktails (because life can't always be serious). Sarah edits the books in our Who the Hell is...? series.
